A Guide to Rannerdale Bluebells: When to Go & What to See

The Open-Air Rannerdale Bluebells
Rannerdale is a quiet, small side valley situated on the shore of Crummock Water, quietly nestled between Buttermere and Loweswater. Beside it rises the fell known as Rannerdale Knotts. For most of the year, this National Trust land is a peaceful corner of the north-western Lake District, characterised by its steep fellside, bracken, and open grass. However, for a short window each spring, the valley floor becomes a dense, vibrant carpet of blue. The contrast of the vivid blue against the pale spring bracken and the dark crags above makes it one of the most distinctive natural events in the county.
The Rannerdale bluebells are highly unusual. Across the rest of Britain, native bluebells are almost exclusively woodland flowers, reliant on the dappled shade of deciduous trees to thrive. At Rannerdale, they flower entirely in the open. They spread across the exposed valley floor and creep up the steep fellside, completely uncovered by any woodland canopy. This rare open-air bloom creates a striking contrast against the rugged fell landscape, drawing visitors who want to see this vivid seasonal change up close.
When to Go and How to Visit
If you are planning a visit, timing is everything. The bluebells flower in spring, usually emerging from late April and continuing into May. Because the display is a short one, the exact week of peak colour changes every year depending on the weather and the severity of the preceding winter. It is always wise to check recent local reports before travelling.
When you do make the journey, plan to arrive early in the morning or visit on a weekday. Parking in the valleys around Buttermere and Crummock Water is highly limited, and the narrow country lanes quickly become congested on spring weekends.
Crucially, visitors must keep strictly to the established paths. Native bluebells are highly sensitive and easily trampled. Once a patch of bluebells has been trodden on, the delicate leaves are crushed, which prevents the bulb from photosynthesising and storing enough energy. A trodden patch simply does not come back that year, leaving visible grey scars across the blue valley floor. Fortunately, the bluebells are only a short walk from the road, and the main paths guide you safely through the flowers. From among the blooms, the view looks straight down over the dark expanse of Crummock Water, framed by the surrounding fell terrain.
The Story Behind the Flowers
The absence of trees here has long puzzled visitors, and local lore has stepped in to explain it. As the story goes, these bluebells do not mark the site of a lost ancient woodland, but rather the site of a battle. Following the Norman conquest, local Cumbrians supposedly ambushed and defeated a company of Norman soldiers in this very valley. According to the legend, the bluebells grew from the ground where the fallen soldiers lay. It is a local legend rather than recorded history, but it remains a favourite story told to those walking up the beck towards the valley head.
Bringing the Valley Home
For many, the brief spring window is their favourite time in the Lake District, but the season is fleeting. To capture that vibrant colour year-round, our collection of Rannerdale Wall Art brings the bloom indoors. Hanging one of these pieces means you can hold onto the brightness of a spring morning on the fell, long after the physical flowers have faded for another year.
It is important to note that these pieces are paintings inspired by the valley in bloom. They offer an impression of the place, capturing the vivid atmosphere and the shifting spring light, rather than serving as a literal likeness or a photograph. The art reflects the intense purples, blues, and greens of the fellside, celebrating the emotional weight of standing among the flowers as they look out towards the water.
Which Size for Which Wall
Every piece in the Rannerdale collection is square, offering a balanced, contemporary window into the landscape. Choosing the right scale depends entirely on the space you wish to fill. Square pieces are sold in three distinct sizes: 40cm, 70cm, and 90cm.
- 40cm: Ideal for smaller, intimate spaces. They work well hung above a bedside table, at the centre of a hallway wall, or grouped together in a reading corner.
- 70cm: These require a little more breathing room. This size commands attention without dominating a room, making it an excellent choice for hanging above a dining room sideboard or in a home office.
- 90cm: These are substantial, focal-point artworks. They are designed for large, open walls, sitting comfortably above a wide living room sofa or anchoring the wall of a spacious staircase.
