Lake District Waterfalls: Where to Find the Best Drops
Share
The landscape of the Lake District is defined by its deep waters, steep fells, and the heavy weather that shapes them both. As water gathers on the high ground and flows down into the valleys, it forms forces and gills that cut through dark rock and ancient woodland. The local term 'force' comes from the Old Norse 'fors', a lasting reminder of the historical roots of this terrain. If you are planning a walk beside a fast-flowing beck or looking to stand beneath a high cascade, this guide covers the most notable lake district waterfalls—detailing where they are, their height, and what to expect when you arrive.
Before planning your route up the crags and ravines, there is one rule for viewing moving water in this region. All of them are best after rain.
Aira Force
Aira Force is the most visited waterfall in the Lakes, drawing many walkers who explore the paths beside Ullswater. The site sits on National Trust land, offering a clear and well-maintained route up the beck. At the top of the main path, the water falls with a drop of about 20 m (65 ft). It passes directly under a stone footbridge before tumbling into a deep, dark wooded gorge. Standing on the bridge, you can feel the dampness in the air and hear the heavy rush of the beck echoing off the steep rocky banks.
Lodore Falls
Situated at the southern end of Derwentwater, Lodore Falls occupies a prominent position in Borrowdale. You can find it lying just behind the hotel of the same name. The water descends over a height of about 30 m (100 ft) in a long, broken series of cascades, pouring over large mossy crags and boulders. Its character is entirely dictated by the weather; it becomes an absolute torrent after rain and reduces to a mere trickle in a dry spell. The chaotic, tumbling motion of the water over the rocks famously became the subject of Robert Southey's poem "The Cataract of Lodore", which attempts to mimic the loud, crashing rhythm of the beck.
Stock Ghyll Force
Stock Ghyll Force is highly accessible, requiring only a short walk from the centre of Ambleside. Leaving the stone buildings behind, the path leads up into an area of dense, mature trees. Here, the water drops a total of about 21 m (70 ft) in two distinct drops through the woodland. The viewing platforms on the steep banks allow you to look down into the flowing water, which cuts a clear path through the woods before making its way down into the village below.
Scale Force
Set high above Crummock Water, Scale Force is typically reached on foot by walking out from Buttermere village. This remote location holds a significant record, being the highest single drop in the Lake District at about 52 m (170 ft). The water plunges deep into a narrow tree-lined ravine, an enclosed cleft in the rock that receives very little direct sunlight. The long approach across the open fells makes arriving at the base of this tall, sheer cascade a memorable point on the journey, with the noise of the falling water echoing off the dark stone walls.
Taylor Gill Force
Taylor Gill Force is found at the head of Borrowdale, high above the farming hamlet of Seathwaite. Walkers usually pass this commanding cascade on the way up towards Sty Head, moving into the higher, wilder fells. The water here plunges roughly about 43 m (140 ft) down the crag. Because of its prominent position on a popular, rugged route, it serves as a massive, noisy landmark for those beginning their ascent up the steep, rocky paths beside the fast-flowing beck.
Dungeon Ghyll Force
Located in Great Langdale, Dungeon Ghyll Force sits directly below the towering, jagged crags of the Langdale Pikes. The waterfall features a drop of about 18 m (60 ft), and is contained entirely within a deep, narrow rocky cleft. The high stone walls of the ravine severely limit the daylight that reaches the water, giving the location a sombre, enclosed atmosphere that feels entirely separate from the wide valley floor below.
Rydal Falls
Set within the grounds of Rydal Hall, situated on the old route between Grasmere and Ambleside, Rydal Falls offers a more structured landscape experience. There are two small falls here, flowing steadily through the estate woodland. The lower one is traditionally viewed through the window of a stone summer house called The Grot. This historic small building was designed specifically to frame the scene of the tumbling water, providing a quiet, sheltered space to watch the beck flow past.
Moss Force
Moss Force is located at the top of Newlands Hause, the steep mountain pass that runs between Buttermere and the Newlands valley. It is a tall thin fall, prominently in view of the road that winds up to the top of the hause. Because it sits so close to the highway, it is one of the easiest waterfalls to observe without undertaking a long walk across the open fells, appearing as a long, pale ribbon of water set against the dark, imposing rock of the hillside.
Ritson's Force
Ritson's Force is located in the remote, dramatic valley of Wasdale, lying near the Wasdale Head Inn. This is a small fall, tucked away amongst the trees and stones near the valley floor. It is named after Will Ritson, a former innkeeper who is still widely remembered locally as "the world's biggest liar". His tall tales about the valley, the local sheep, and the residents of the fells made him a famous figure, and his name remains firmly attached to this quiet, fast-flowing stretch of water.
The Pictures of the Waterfalls
If you wish to remember a favourite walk or bring the character of the fells into your home, our Rivers & Waterfalls collection explores the moving water of the region. Please note that the paintings are impressions of these places, not photographs of them.
For those drawn to the deep gorge near Ullswater, we offer a dedicated collection for Aira Force, as well as a range of graphic Aira Force travel posters. Within these collections, you can find specific works capturing the colour and light of the gorge, such as Aira Force Waterfall in Golden Light, Luminous Cascade at Aira Force, and Aira Force Waterfall Abstract Palette.
If you are looking for other areas, you can explore regional artwork including Borrowdale, which pairs well with pieces like the Vivid Lodore Falls Lake View. We also offer artwork representing Buttermere, where you might enjoy the Scale Force Waterfall In Teal. For those who prefer the southern and central fells, we have dedicated sections for Ambleside, Great Langdale, and Rydal Water. Finally, for admirers of the dramatic western valleys, our Wasdale collection captures the darker crags and deep waters of the area.
