Meaningful Gifts for Sailors: A Lake District Guide
Share
Finding gifts for sailors often leads down a familiar path of novelty items or highly technical gear that they likely already own. The truth is, people who spend their time on the water usually have a very specific set of requirements for their equipment. Rather than guessing which piece of hardware they need, an alternative approach is to look towards the landscape that draws them to the water in the first place.
For generations, the Lake District has been a focal point for those who love to navigate by wind or paddle. Windermere, England's largest natural lake, has been sailed for generations, its long stretch of water providing ample room to catch a breeze. Further north and west, Ullswater, Coniston Water, and Bassenthwaite Lake each have a sailing club too, serving communities of people who know the local winds and the changing shadows on the fells. The lakes are also paddled by canoe and kayak, offering a slower, quieter way to explore the shoreline and the mouths of the becks that feed the main waters.
A Note on Choosing Boat Art
When considering fine art as a present, it is helpful to set a clear expectation. The pictures we offer are of boats on the lakes and the light on the water — not of the recipient's own boat. Finding an exact match for someone's specific vessel, down to the rigging and hull colour, is a task for a bespoke commission. Instead, these pieces capture the atmosphere of being out on the water: the sudden shift in the weather, the glow of the late afternoon sun on a wooden deck, or the sharp silhouette of a sail against a distant crag. They are about the shared experience of navigating the lakes, whether by catching the wind or pulling a paddle through a quiet bay.
For the Sailor
Sailing on the lakes requires an understanding of how the fells dictate the wind. The steep sides of the valleys can funnel gusts or leave pockets of absolute calm. For the sailor in your life, a piece of art that reflects this dynamic environment can be a welcome addition to a study or living room. The focus here is on the relationship between the boat, the water, and the weather.
Our piece Breezy Sailing Beneath the Fells illustrates the steady momentum of a boat cutting through the lake, surrounded by the high, rugged landscape. If they prefer the quieter, early morning atmosphere when the low cloud still clings to the valleys, White Sails Beneath Misty Fells offers a muted, reflective tone. Alternatively, for a brighter perspective that captures the end of a good day on the water, Sailing Boat on Golden Water highlights the rich tones that reflect off the surface as the sun lowers behind the western fells. There is also the dramatic change in weather that every lake sailor knows well, captured in Lake Sailing in Stormy Light, and the distinctive late-season colour in Vibrant Sailboat Beneath Pink Fells.
For the Paddler
Not everyone who loves the water relies on the wind. The lakes are also paddled by canoe and kayak, allowing for exploration of the shallower edges, the hidden shingle beaches, and the quiet waters where the main lake meets the land. Paddlers experience the lakes from a lower vantage point, intimately connected to the ripples and the immediate reflections of the surrounding landscape.
If you are choosing a present for someone who prefers a paddle to a tiller, look for scenes that emphasise the solitude and steady rhythm of this activity. Solo Canoeist on a Golden Lake focuses on the quiet isolation of being out on the water alone, navigating the calm surface as the light begins to change. For a more vivid scene, Yellow Kayak on Reflecting Fells contrasts the bright hull of a small boat against the deep, dark reflections of the steep ground rising sharply from the shoreline. These pieces speak to the slow, methodical exploration of the Lake District's waters.
For the One Who Loves Boats and Jetties
Sometimes, the appeal of the lakes is simply being near the boats, listening to the halyards tapping against the masts, and watching the water lap against the wooden supports of a pier. You do not need to be an active sailor to appreciate the maritime atmosphere of the lake shores. For those who enjoy the quiet moments at the water's edge, scenes of moored boats and jetties offer a sense of calm.
Golden Light over Windermere Boats captures the quiet evening hours when the day's activity has ceased, and the vessels rest on their moorings. Similarly, Windermere Jetty in Golden Light focuses on the wooden structures that reach out into the deeper water, serving as the starting point for countless journeys. Choosing the Right Size and Frame
When buying art for someone else, the practical details are just as important as the image itself. Every piece we offer is square, which provides a balanced focal point for a room and makes it easier to position on various walls. We offer three specific sizes to suit different spaces in a home:
- 40cm: Well suited for a hallway, a narrow alcove, or positioned by a bedside.
- 70cm: Works nicely above a sideboard, a desk, or in a dining room.
- 90cm: Designed to hold a wider wall, such as the space above a sofa.
You can choose between framed or unframed prints, as well as framed or unframed canvases. If you opt for a framed piece, the frames are available in black, white, or natural wood, and they arrive with hanging fixings already fitted, meaning the recipient can place it on their wall immediately.

Ordering and Delivery
Everything is made to order. Once you have made your choice, it takes 2-5 working days to print the piece, followed by 3-7 working days for UK delivery. If you are organising your purchase in time for Christmas, you will need to allow about three weeks in total from the point of ordering to the day it arrives at the door, to ensure it is there for the day itself.
To complete the present, a gift message can be added at checkout, allowing you to include a note before it is sent on its way. Finding a meaningful present for someone who spends their weekends navigating the tarns and lakes does not have to mean buying another piece of waterproof clothing. A well-chosen picture of the light catching the water beneath the fells can bring the atmosphere of the lakes into their home, all year round.
