Angletarn Pikes: 566m Height, Walks and Tarn Views

Angletarn Pikes brings together two rocky tops, a much-loved tarn and a wide outlook above Patterdale. At 566m, it is modest beside the higher Far Eastern Fells, but its broken summit ground gives it a character quite distinct from their broader ridges. Walkers come for the view over Angle Tarn as much as the summit itself: water, small islands and rough fellside held closely together.

Twin summits above Angle Tarn

The plural name matters: Angletarn Pikes has two distinct rocky summits, with the northern top reaching 566m. A dip separates the two, giving the fell a more varied outline than a single rounded summit would suggest. Its position east of Patterdale places it above one of the Lake District’s principal valleys, with the Helvellyn range forming a substantial western backdrop across the dale.

The southern top is particularly associated with the view down to Angle Tarn. From above, the tarn’s irregular shoreline and small islands are readily appreciated, while the surrounding crags and rough grass give the foreground plenty of detail. This close relationship between summit rock and water is the fell’s defining feature. The outlook combines nearby textures with the longer lines of the surrounding ridges, rather than relying on height alone.

A Wainwright in the Far Eastern Fells

Angletarn Pikes appears in The Far Eastern Fells, Book Two of Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. It ranks 143rd by height among the 214 Wainwrights. Its summit grid reference is NY413148, and its recorded height is 566m, or 1,857ft. Those figures place it well below the region’s highest ground, but they say little about the interest packed into its twin tops and tarn-side setting.

Nearby Wainwrights include Place Fell, Beda Fell, Brock Crags and Hartsop Dodd. Together, these fells help frame the country around Patterdale, Hartsop and the southern reaches of Ullswater. Angletarn Pikes belongs to the more varied, rocky ground on the western side of the Far Eastern Fells, contrasting with the extensive upland ridges associated with High Street. It can be appreciated as a destination in its own right or as part of a longer fell day.

The tarn that gives the fell its identity

Angle Tarn is the best-known feature associated with Angletarn Pikes, and its name is worth distinguishing from another Lakeland tarn. This is the Angle Tarn above Patterdale, not the tarn below Bowfell encountered on walks from Great Langdale. The shared name can easily cause confusion when looking up photographs or planning a visit.

For walkers who value the shape and detail of a landscape as much as its highest point, the appeal is straightforward. Two rocky tops offer changing perspectives, the tarn supplies a strong focal point, and the valley and surrounding fells give the scene its wider setting.

Angletarn Pikes on your wall

A painting of Angletarn Pikes can bring back more than the moment on the summit: the shape of an island, dark water beneath the crags, or the western fells beyond Patterdale. As a print or canvas at home, that familiar arrangement of rock and tarn holds its own.
