Dollywaggon Pike: 858.5m, Walks and Summit Views

Dollywaggon Pike gives the southern end of the Helvellyn ridge a characterful finish: broad upland turf on one side, steep craggy ground above Grisedale on the other. At 858.5 metres, it is a substantial summit rather than an afterthought to Helvellyn. Walkers who leave the main ridge path for its top find a particularly rewarding outlook over Grisedale, with Fairfield and Seat Sandal close at hand.

A summit above Grisedale

Dollywaggon Pike stands at the southern end of the main Helvellyn ridge, immediately south of Nethermost Pike. Its shape reflects the strong contrast between the two sides of this range. To the west, open slopes fall towards the Thirlmere valley; to the east, crags and steep ground overlook Grisedale. The summit lies east of the main ridge path, so simply following the broad line of the ridge can mean passing the fell without visiting its highest point.

The Tongue, an eastern spur, is one of Dollywaggon Pike’s most distinctive features. It projects into Grisedale and helps give the fell a much sharper appearance from the dale than its grassy western slopes suggest. This is a summit whose character changes markedly with your viewpoint: relatively rounded within the high ridge, but rugged and strongly defined when seen from below.

Grisedale Tarn and the surrounding fells

To the south lies Grisedale Tarn, beneath Dollywaggon Pike, Seat Sandal and Fairfield. The tarn marks a clear break in the high ground: beyond it, the land rises again towards Fairfield, while Seat Sandal stands to its west. This arrangement makes Dollywaggon Pike an excellent place to understand how the Helvellyn and Fairfield groups fit together.

The summit outlook takes in the length of Grisedale towards the Ullswater valley, as well as the neighbouring ridges and the wider Lakeland skyline. Fairfield is a substantial presence across the southern gap, while Nethermost Pike carries the high ground north towards Helvellyn. The immediate interest is not only in distant summits but in the depth and shape of the surrounding valleys, with the eastern face dropping steeply away below the summit area.

Dollywaggon Pike in the Eastern Fells

Dollywaggon Pike belongs to The Eastern Fells, the first volume of Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, published in 1955. Its surveyed height is 858.5 metres, or 2,817 feet, placing it eighteenth among the 214 Wainwrights. The summit grid reference is NY346130.

Its best-known walking context is the Helvellyn ridge, where it is commonly combined with Nethermost Pike and Helvellyn. It also features in longer outings linking the high ground with Grisedale Tarn. Those connections should not obscure its own appeal: Dollywaggon Pike offers a distinct summit, an impressive eastern face and a natural southern conclusion to one of Lakeland’s best-known ridges. As elsewhere on this high ground, exposed conditions and poor visibility can make a substantial difference to a day’s walking.

Dollywaggon Pike on your wall

A painting of Dollywaggon Pike can recall more than the summit itself: the dark edge above Grisedale, the open ridge, or Fairfield beyond the tarn. On a wall at home, those familiar shapes keep a particular day on the fells close at hand.
