Sale Fell: Height, Walks and Views near Bassenthwaite

Sale Fell stands near the north-western end of Bassenthwaite Lake, a grassy Wainwright whose modest height is part of its appeal. At 359m (1,178ft), it offers open fell country without the scale of a high mountain outing. Its rounded slopes, views towards Skiddaw and position above the Wythop valley make it a rewarding choice for walkers who enjoy the quieter edges of Lakeland.

A grassy fell above Wythop
Sale Fell belongs to the gentler northern fringe of the North Western Fells, west of Bassenthwaite Lake. Its upper slopes are predominantly grassy, with a rounded, open summit rather than a rocky crown. Woodland occupies parts of its eastern side, giving the fell a varied outline when seen from the surrounding countryside. The contrast between open fell, trees and the enclosed fields below is an important part of its character.
The summit stands at 359m (1,178ft), at grid reference NY194296. Height alone does not explain its appeal: Sale Fell sits where the higher Lakeland fells begin to give way to lower country. Skiddaw is a prominent feature of the outlook to the east, across the Bassenthwaite valley. This relationship with a much larger mountain gives the view a sense of scale quite out of proportion to Sale Fell's own elevation.
Sale Fell among the Wainwrights
Alfred Wainwright included Sale Fell in Book Six of his pictorial guides, The North Western Fells. It ranks 208th by height among the 214 Wainwrights, placing it firmly among the smaller summits in the collection. Its inclusion is a useful reminder that these fells are not simply a list of the Lake District's highest mountains: lower, distinctive summits are part of the landscape too.
Nearby Wainwrights include Ling Fell, Broom Fell, Lord's Seat and Graystones. Ling Fell is the close counterpart across the Wythop valley, while Broom Fell and Lord's Seat belong to the higher country farther south. Together, these fells form a less rugged part of the North Western group than the sharp ridges around the Newlands valley. Sale Fell is best understood as an outer fell with its own outlook, rather than a smaller version of those higher ridges.
Walking and the wider view
Sale Fell is often walked from the Wythop area and is frequently paired with Ling Fell. Its relatively low elevation makes a shorter outing possible, though the amount of ascent and time required depend on the starting point and chosen paths. There is no need to combine summits to appreciate it: an unhurried walk allows time to notice the changing relationship between the grassy foreground, wooded slopes and distant fells.
Its appeal rests on that combination of accessible scale and recognisably Lakeland surroundings. Dedicated walking guides provide the practical detail for choosing an approach; a current map and the weather forecast remain useful companions even on a modest fell.
