Sergeant's Crag: Height, Walks and Views at 571m

Sergeant's Crag is a compact, rocky fell above the meeting of Borrowdale's side valleys, Langstrath and Greenup. At 571m, it is considerably lower than neighbouring High Raise, but its position gives it a character quite separate from the broad uplands behind. Often walked alongside Eagle Crag, it rewards attention in its own right: a distinct summit, steep valley scenery and a fine outlook across Langstrath.

A rocky summit between two valleys

Sergeant's Crag stands on the ridge running north from High Raise towards Eagle Crag, with Langstrath to the west and Greenup to the east. These valleys give the fell much of its definition. Rather than an isolated mountain, it is a distinct rocky rise on the edge of the Central Fells, where higher, more open ground breaks into the steep slopes above Borrowdale.

The summit reaches 571m, or 1,873ft, at grid reference NY273113. Rock outcrops distinguish the top from the grassier ground connecting it with High Raise. Eagle Crag lies immediately to the north, forming the lower end of the same ridge. The two are closely associated in walking itineraries, but each has its own summit and its own entry in Wainwright's guides.

Its place in the Central Fells

Sergeant's Crag belongs to Book Three of Alfred Wainwright's Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, The Central Fells. It ranks 141st in height among the 214 Wainwrights. That modest placing says little about the scale of the surrounding scenery: the valleys below and the higher fells around Langstrath make this feel a substantial piece of mountain country.

High Raise is the principal higher neighbour to the south, while Ullscarf and Sergeant Man are other Wainwrights in the surrounding Central Fells. Sergeant's Crag offers a useful contrast with their broader upland setting. Its appeal lies in the meeting of rocky ridge and deep dale, rather than in altitude alone. For walkers collecting the Wainwrights, pairing it with Eagle Crag is an obvious attraction, though the two should not be treated as interchangeable viewpoints.

Views and walking connections

Langstrath is central to the outlook, with the Glaramara ridge rising across the valley to the west. Looking north brings Eagle Crag and the Borrowdale landscape into the picture; to the south, High Raise supplies the higher backdrop. This combination of close valley detail and surrounding fell ridges is the summit's particular strength.

Stonethwaite is a familiar starting area for walks taking in Sergeant's Crag and Eagle Crag, while longer outings link the ridge with High Raise. These are fell walks rather than simple valley strolls: steep, rocky ground and changing visibility deserve proper preparation. A dedicated route guide and an appropriate map are the right companions for choosing an outing that suits your experience.

Sergeant's Crag on your wall

A painting of Sergeant's Crag can bring back the particular feel of a Borrowdale walk: rock underfoot, Langstrath below and higher ground beyond. As a print or canvas, that familiar ridge gives a room a quiet connection to days spent among the Central Fells.
