Stybarrow Dodd: 843.7m Height, Ridge Walks and Views

Stybarrow Dodd is a broad, grassy summit on the northern part of the Helvellyn range, where the ridge opens into generous stretches of upland walking. At 843.7 metres, it has considerable height without the rocky drama of some better-known neighbours. Its appeal lies in that open character: long views, easy connections with the other Dodds, and a sense of how the Eastern Fells fit together.

A broad summit on the Helvellyn range
Stybarrow Dodd belongs to the high ground north of Helvellyn, standing between Great Dodd to the north and Sticks Pass to the south. Its rounded summit is characteristic of the Dodds: grass-covered uplands with broad shoulders rather than a sharply defined rocky crest. The highest point lies at grid reference NY343189, and the Database of British and Irish Hills records its elevation as 843.7 metres, or 2,768 feet.
The summit's openness is central to its character. In clear weather, the outlook takes in the surrounding Eastern Fells and reaches west towards the central and western Lakeland fells. Looking south, the continuation of the range towards Raise and Helvellyn gives the view a clear structure. This is a place for understanding the sweep of the ridge, rather than seeking a single dramatic summit feature.
Stybarrow Dodd among the Eastern Fells
Stybarrow Dodd appears in The Eastern Fells, Book One of Alfred Wainwright's seven-volume guide to the Lakeland fells. It ranks 21st in height among the 214 Wainwrights. That places this comparatively understated summit among the higher fells in the collection, despite its gentler outline beside the craggy profiles associated with Helvellyn.
Its neighbouring Wainwrights include Great Dodd, Watson's Dodd, Raise and White Side. Great Dodd and Watson's Dodd form its closest northern group, while Raise stands across Sticks Pass to the south. White Side lies farther south along the range. These connections explain why Stybarrow Dodd is often visited as part of a longer ridge walk: it belongs to a continuous stretch of high country, not an isolated summit with a single obvious approach.
Ridge walks and Sticks Pass
Sticks Pass is the important walking link immediately south of Stybarrow Dodd. It crosses the range between the Thirlmere side and the Glenridding side, separating Stybarrow Dodd from Raise. Walks taking in the fell commonly combine it with Great Dodd and Watson's Dodd, or include it in a longer traverse of the Helvellyn range.
The rounded terrain should not be mistaken for straightforward navigation in every condition. Broad grassy tops offer fewer obvious landmarks when cloud settles, and this is exposed ground above 800 metres. Stybarrow Dodd rewards a clear day, when its relationships with the neighbouring summits become part of the pleasure of being there.
