Troutbeck Tongue: 364m Height, Walks and Views

Troutbeck Tongue is a small fell with a remarkably clear identity: a grassy ridge rising between two becks in the upper Troutbeck valley. At 364m, it sits well below the surrounding skyline, yet its rocky southern end gives it real presence. Walkers come for the valley setting, the view towards Windermere and the pleasure of looking up at the larger fells rather than always standing on them.

A distinct ridge within the Troutbeck valley

Troutbeck Tongue stands between Trout Beck and Hagg Gill, with the higher Far Eastern Fells rising around it. Its elongated shape explains the name: a tongue of ground projecting into the valley, rather than a summit on the main enclosing skyline. The southern end rises steeply above the valley floor, where exposed rock interrupts the grass and gives this modest fell a more rugged face.

That contrast is central to its character. Seen against the surrounding ridges, the Tongue looks small; viewed from the fields below, its southern nose is a definite landmark. The fell makes the shape of the valley easy to read, separating the two watercourses before they meet farther south. Its setting matters as much as its altitude.

Views towards Windermere and the higher fells

The best-known outlook is southwards down Troutbeck towards Windermere. The valley provides a long opening between the enclosing slopes, so the view has depth without needing a high summit. Pasture and field boundaries are part of the scene, placing the fell firmly within a working Lakeland valley rather than apart from it.

To the east, Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick belong to the higher ridge dividing Troutbeck from Kentmere. Their greater height gives the Tongue an unusually close relationship with the skyline above it. This is not an all-round panorama from the roof of the district: the surrounding fells limit some distant views, but their slopes and ridges give the foreground its strength. For walkers who enjoy valley structure as much as distant summits, that is much of the appeal.

Troutbeck Tongue in the Wainwrights

Troutbeck Tongue appears in The Far Eastern Fells, the second book of Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume series. Its recorded height is 364m (1,194ft), its summit grid reference is NY422064, and it ranks 207th by height among the 214 Wainwrights. Nearby Wainwrights include Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick and Sour Howes.

Its inclusion offers a useful reminder that the Wainwrights are not simply a list of high summits. Here, a recognisable landform and a distinctive valley position make a low fell worth knowing in its own right. Walks commonly approach through the Troutbeck valley, and the modest summit height should not be confused with an absence of distance. It rewards time spent on the approach as well as at the top.

A painting of Troutbeck Tongue can bring home something quieter than a high summit panorama: the grassy ridge, the enclosing fells and the long view towards Windermere. For anyone who knows this valley on foot, those familiar shapes carry the memory of a day outside.
