In the Barnaby West collection, the rugged grandeur of the Lake District is reimagined through a lens of stark, uncompromising minimalism. Each piece strips away the superfluous, leaving only the most powerful shapes of the landscape. Pitch-black silhouettes form the heavy anchors of these scenes—steep mountain ridges, clusters of trees framing a stone bridge, and solitary figures pausing on dramatic cliff edges. These dark, weighty forms contrast sharply with vast expanses of pale beige and off-white negative space, creating a profound sense of scale and quiet isolation. What makes these landscapes truly distinctive is the highly disciplined use of colour. Alongside deep, muted grassy greens in valley scenes, almost every composition features a jarring, beautiful block of flat rust-orange. Whether mapping the sunlit facet of a steep fell, forming a startling horizontal band across a valley, or outlining the edge of a sweeping ridge, this vibrant orange provides a sudden burst of warmth and contemporary energy. The resulting prints and framed canvases are dramatic and sophisticated. They offer a highly graphic interpretation of the Lakes that anchors a room with bold contrast and clean, decisive lines.
