Saint Patrick's Well, beside the road,
Keeps hold of what the old folk told:
That here the saint's own blessing flowed,
And named the dale in days of old.

Place Fell stands high across the vale,
Its bracken burning red and brown,
And sheep come drifting, head to tail,
Along the walls, and trickle down.

The little terrier that took
The valley's name was bred up here,
A dog for crag and scree and brook,
A small black dog that knows no fear.
