Striding Edge

From Hole-in-the-Wall the path runs on
Along a crest of broken stone,
With drops on either side, and gone
The easy ground, the path we'd known.

Down on the right, Red Tarn lies cold
Within its cove; down on the left,
Nethermost Cove; and we keep hold
Of rock, and cross each gap and cleft.

Then down the Chimney's awkward rock,
One last climb up the scree, and then
Helvellyn's top: we stop, take stock,
And look back at the Edge again.
