Most bluebells shelter under trees;
In Rannerdale they climb the fell,
Out in the open, in the breeze,
Each May, a blue too deep to tell.

The story goes that, long ago,
The Normans marched in and were slain,
And where they fell, the bluebells grow,
Their blood returned in blue again.

We keep to paths, and let them be,
So every May they bloom once more,
Blue down the fell for all to see,
Right down to Crummock Water's shore.
