Set into a lovely linocut, this poem tells the story of Thirlmere being dammed for Manchester, perfectly capturing its clean, cold waters, the drowned hall of Armboth, and Helvellyn’s quiet watch. Anyone who treasures the deep, hidden history of our countryside will love having this thoughtful print on their wall.

Thirlmere

Two small lakes lay here, side by side,
Till Manchester, so far away,
Raised up a dam, and made them wide,
One water, as it lies today.

It needs no pump: it's left to flow
For ninety-six long miles, all told,
Downhill, to Manchester below,
And reaches taps still clean and cold.

Beneath it, fields and lanes lie drowned,
And Armboth's hall is lost from view;
Helvellyn, on the eastern ground,
Keeps watch in shades of green and blue.

The print. A4 (21 x 29.7cm) or A3 (29.7 x 42cm). Framed in a solid wood moulding in black, white or natural wood, with shatterproof acrylic glazing and hanging fixtures fitted, or unframed on 200gsm fine-art paper, sent flat and ready for a frame of your own. Printed to order.

Sizes

A4 — 21 × 29.7 cm

A3 — 29.7 × 42 cm

Each size is the printed sheet itself. Framed, the 20 mm moulding sits outside it and there is no mount, so the whole sheet is on show. Unframed, it is sent flat, ready for a frame of your own.

Paper, frame and glazing

Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte fine-art paper — no gloss and no glare, so the words read cleanly from across a room.

Framed in a 20 mm wide solid wood moulding in black, white or natural wood, glazed with shatterproof acrylic rather than glass, with a backing board and hanging fixtures already fitted.

Unframed prints are the same paper and the same print, sent flat.
