This reproduction print presents the Map of the County of Cumberland (reduced), originally created in 1783 by Joseph Hodskinson & Thomas Donald. The sheet maps the historic northern county in fine detail, prominently featuring an elaborate dedication to Charles Howard, Earl of Surrey.

Engraved in the manner of the late eighteenth century and coloured by hand along its boundaries, the map shades the fells of the Lake District with fine strokes. Elegant lettering names the towns and the roads of its time across Cumberland, and a decorative title cartouche, set in flowing script, fills the lower part of the sheet.

This detailed historical record makes an absorbing focal point for a study or a cottage sitting room, where walkers can trace the early mapping of the fells. It is offered unframed for a frame of your own, or ready to hang in natural wood, white, or black; a slim black frame beautifully grounds the aged, printed tones of this early engraving.

Sizes

The sizes offered are the ones this sheet prints sharply at from its own scan — choose above. Each is width × height of the printed sheet.

Framed, the 20 mm moulding sits outside the sheet and there is no mount, so the whole map, margins and all, is on show. Unframed, it is sent flat, ready for a frame of your own.

Paper, frame and glazing

Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte fine-art paper — no gloss and no glare, so the colouring and the small lettering read cleanly.

Framed in a 20 mm wide, 24 mm deep solid wood moulding in natural wood, black or white, glazed with shatterproof acrylic rather than glass, with a backing board and hanging fixtures already fitted.

Unframed prints are the same paper and the same print, sent flat.

How it is reproduced

Printed from a high-resolution scan of an original copy of the sheet. The lettering, colouring, margins and marks are the map's own: nothing is redrawn. Where the scan needed it, the sheet has been straightened and the tone of the paper evened out.

It is a map of its time, not of today: roads, railways and boundaries are as they were drawn then.

Delivery and returns

Every map is printed and framed to order, at the production facility closest to your delivery address.

Framed pieces are made and dispatched within 5–10 working days. UK delivery normally takes up to five working days after dispatch; international orders can take up to 28 days.
