Ambleside

A house is perched on Stock Beck's bridge,
Two rooms above the running stream;
Beyond the roofs, the Fairfield ridge
Takes on the first of morning's gleam.

Up through the woods, the water's roar
Grows loud where Stock Ghyll Force comes down,
White ribbons on a mossy floor,
A step behind the busy town.

Then Waterhead as evening falls,
The boats drawn in, the water slate;
The fells you climbed, their grey stone walls,
Grow dark, and still you stay, and wait.
