Buttermere

The pines stand wading in the lake,
Their roots in water, dark and still;
Above, the day begins to break
On Fleetwith Pike, and spills downhill.

I walk the shore path, slow, alone,
Where Sourmilk Gill comes pouring white,
And every rounded, rain-dark stone
Is washed in thin November light.

The lake keeps everything it sees:
The fell, the cloud, the leaning pine;
And years from here I'll carry these
As if the stillness had been mine.
