Glenridding

The steamers rest beside the pier
At Ullswater's far southern end,
And walkers gather, boots and gear,
Where Helvellyn's long paths ascend.

Up Greenside Road the old mine lies,
Where men once hacked the lead from stone;
Its levels closed, its spoil heaps rise
Grey on the fellside, left alone.

And once the beck, in Desmond's rain,
Came roaring through the village street;
They cleared the stones and built again,
And now it chatters at our feet.
