Helvellyn

We leave Glenridding in the grey
And climb until the valley's gone;
Then Striding Edge cuts through the day,
A blade of rock to balance on.

Below, Red Tarn lies cold and black,
Cupped in the hollow of the hill;
The wind leans in and pushes back,
And then, for one long breath, goes still.

At last the top: the ground goes wide,
A plain above the world, and bare;
We sit against the shelter's side
And breathe the whole of Cumbria's air.
