This gentle poem tells the story of Herdwick Sheep and their changing fleeces, capturing the wild, unfenced spirit of the fells through rain and snow. Anyone who treasures traditional hill farming or the legacy of Beatrix Potter will love hanging this beautiful linocut print on their wall.

Herdwick Sheep

Their lambs are born as dark as peat,
Then year by year the fleeces fade
To grey, while faces, white and neat,
Look out from walls the farmers made.

Each flock is hefted to its hill:
Each ewe will teach her lamb to know
Its patch of fell, and keep it still,
With no fence, through the rain and snow.

And Beatrix Potter loved them too,
And left her farms, when she had gone,
With word to keep the Herdwicks, who
Still graze the fells, and carry on.

The print. A4 (21 x 29.7cm) or A3 (29.7 x 42cm). Framed in a solid wood moulding in black, white or natural wood, with shatterproof acrylic glazing and hanging fixtures fitted, or unframed on 200gsm fine-art paper, sent flat and ready for a frame of your own. Printed to order.

Sizes

A4 — 21 × 29.7 cm

A3 — 29.7 × 42 cm

Each size is the printed sheet itself. Framed, the 20 mm moulding sits outside it and there is no mount, so the whole sheet is on show. Unframed, it is sent flat, ready for a frame of your own.

Paper, frame and glazing

Printed on 200 gsm enhanced matte fine-art paper — no gloss and no glare, so the words read cleanly from across a room.

Framed in a 20 mm wide solid wood moulding in black, white or natural wood, glazed with shatterproof acrylic rather than glass, with a backing board and hanging fixtures already fitted.

Unframed prints are the same paper and the same print, sent flat.
