Hiking on Striding Edge

We take the Mires Beck trod to climb the fell,
Beyond the intake wall where bracken thins.
A constant updraft bites the saddle's swell,
And at High Spying How, the edge begins.

A thousand feet below, Red Tarn lies deep,
Cupped in the northern cove, dark iron-grey.
To south, the drops of Nethermost fall steep,
Leaving a narrow spine of rocky way.

We pick our footing on the highest rock,
And press our fingers deep within the seam.
We test the firmness of each weathered block,
Far up above the ghyll's descending stream.

The edge breaks sudden at the chimney's cleft,
A downward clamber from the jagged crest.
A polished foothold tested on the left,
With cold and solid stone against the chest.

Beyond the step, the final headwall waits,
A gasping, upwards pull through sliding scree.
We reach the rim, the steepness dissipates,
And find the shelter in the summit's lee.
