Above Red Tarn, a narrow ridge runs high,
Its broken rock a line against the sky.
On Striding Edge, I pause to choose my tread,
With Helvellyn’s rising slopes ahead.

My hands find purchase on the weathered stone;
Among these fells, my cares seem less my own.
When cloud comes down, the distant views grow small,
And caution matters more than views at all.

Beyond the ridge, the higher slopes still rise,
And draw my gaze towards the shifting skies.
I take no prize but memories away:
The rock, the tarn, the slow-earned miles of day.
