From Seatoller the road climbs steep,
At one in four, through crag and scree,
To where the mountain's slate lies deep,
And men still cut it, patiently.

The old paths show where, long ago,
Men ran the slate down, sled by sled,
With all that weight of stone in tow
Behind them, and the drop ahead.

Then west, the road winds down the fell
Beneath the Pike to Gatesgarth Farm,
Where Buttermere lies like a spell,
Stretched out ahead, and grey, and calm.
