Past drystone walls and bracken brown,
And makes you stop a dozen times
To look back at the shrinking town.

A stone beside the road, they say,
Looks like a kirk, and names the height;
And at the top, at end of day,
The old inn's windows fill with light.

Then over, down the other side,
Where Brothers Water, small and still,
Lies waiting, and the dale lies wide
Below the last long drop of hill.
