A boy once asked his father how
The water came down at Lodore,
And Southey answered, then as now,
In rhyme on rhyme on rhyme, and more.

In dry weeks it is just a thread
That slides between the mossy stones;
But after rain, the whole cliff's head
Comes down in white, and shakes your bones.

So here's my answer, short and plain,
For anyone who hears it roar:
It comes down best in Lakeland rain.
