The screes pour down in stilled cascade
And slip beneath the water's skin,
Into the deepest lake, and fade
Too far for light to follow in.

Beyond the head, Great Gable stands,
A pyramid against the rain;
The walls of Wasdale fold their hands
Around the fields and narrow lane.

I came for quiet. Quiet came,
Not gentle, but the older kind
That knew the fells but not my name,
And rode home with me, close behind.
