Pooley Bridge

The river rose one winter night
And took the old stone bridge away;
A new one, bright and steel and light,
Now spans the Eamont where it lay.

Here Ullswater begins, or ends,
Depending on which way you're bound;
The steamer waits; the long lake bends
Away through fells, and out of sound.

And Dunmallard, with its crown of trees,
Stands guard above the little street,
Where tea is poured, and dogs at ease
Lie tired and muddy at our feet.
