The Rothay breaks its Grasmere bound,
To flood this shallow patch of ground.
Below Nab Scar, the fellside drops
Beyond the drystone intack tops.

On Loughrigg’s flank, the quarry gapes,
Where blasted slate leaves jagged shapes.
The lower trod hugs tight the shore,
Above the water’s stony floor.

Two islands break the open track,
Where winter floods leave heavy wrack.
The herons roost upon the holme,
Where deadwood snags catch river foam.

Because the basin lacks the deep,
The winter frost is quick to creep.
It binds the rushes to the mud,
And stills the Rothay’s entering flood.
