A Guide to Lake District Travel Posters by Lake

Choosing a Poster of Your Favourite Lake
When looking for Travel Posters of the Lake District, the choice often begins not with a colour or a style, but with a specific place. Everyone who walks the fells has a favourite body of water. It might be the lake you walk round in autumn, the water you swim in during the summer months, or the shoreline you grew up beside. Choosing a print is about capturing a connection to that exact landscape. We have organised our collections lake by lake, for someone choosing a poster of a particular lake, for themselves or as a gift for the person who loves that water.
Windermere

Starting in the south, Windermere is England’s largest natural lake, complete with its traditional steamers and wooden jetties. The sheer scale of the water means artwork often focuses on the surface lapping against a hull, or the long views towards the distant fells. Whether you prefer flat blocks of colour or subtle shading, you can explore our Windermere travel posters. A characteristic piece is the Windermere Pale Peaks and Lake Steamer, capturing the distinct atmosphere of the lower fells.
Buttermere
Further west lies Buttermere, the small lake with the pines on its shore and the bulk of Fleetwith Pike at its head. The contrasting dark greens of the shoreline pines against the steep fellside makes this valley particularly atmospheric. Posters draw the eye towards the dominating peaks rising straight from the valley floor. To see this landscape interpreted in a flat-colour style, look at the Buttermere — Railway Screen Print Travel Poster, or browse our Buttermere travel posters.
Derwentwater
Heading northwards brings us to Derwentwater, the lake beside Keswick, known for its wooded islands. Artwork frequently uses the islands as a focal point, setting the dark silhouettes of the trees against the lighter backdrop of the surrounding fells and the wide sky. The Derwentwater — Railway Screen Print Travel Poster shows how these natural elements translate into bold, graphic design. You can view the full range in our Derwentwater travel posters collection.
Ullswater
To the east, Ullswater is long and bent, with Helvellyn rising above its western shore. The dog-leg shape of the water means the view constantly changes as you travel along its length, offering steep crags on one side and rolling ground on the other. Designs emphasise the sharp rise of the fells from the water’s edge. The Ullswater — Railway Screen Print Travel Poster anchors this sheer scale. Further variations exist within our Ullswater travel posters.
Coniston Water

Coniston Water sits securely below the Old Man of Coniston. The dark water and looming fell dictate the mood of the valley. Posters regularly feature the lake with the familiar profile of the Old Man rising behind, a landscape recognisable to anyone who has caught the ferry across the water. A quiet take on this scene is the Coniston Water: Rowboat in Pastel Light. Find similar pieces in our Coniston Water travel posters.
Grasmere
In the centre of the region is Grasmere, Wordsworth’s village and its lake. The scale here is smaller, quieter, and enclosed by the fells. The single island in the centre of the water is a recurring motif in prints of the area, often framed by the tall reeds that line the banks. For a delicate interpretation of this setting, consider the Grasmere Woodblock: Pink Dawn and Tall Reeds, or look through our Grasmere travel posters.
Rydal Water
Next door to Grasmere is Rydal Water, small and reedy. It is a shallow body of water ringed by woodland and fell paths. Artwork often focuses on the still reflections and dense patches of reeds that break the surface, capturing the sheltered nature of the valley. The Rydal Water — Muted Modern Travel Poster reflects this quiet focus. More options are available in our Rydal Water travel posters.
Wast Water
Over on the western edge lies Wast Water, the deepest lake in England, sitting beneath the dark slopes of the Screes. It is a stark, remote valley. Posters highlight the dramatic plunge of the scree slopes directly into the depths, alongside the commanding presence of Great Gable at the head of the valley. The Wastwater Taupe Peaks and Rocky Shore print reflects this rugged terrain. View more designs in our Wast Water travel posters.
Tarn Hows
Returning to the southern fells is Tarn Hows, a made tarn with islands, situated in the low ground above Coniston. The dense conifer planting around its banks makes it distinct from the wilder tarns higher up. Artwork leans on the shapes of the tall trees and the small, wooded islands. The Tarn Hows — Muted Modern Travel Poster captures this structured landscape. For more, see our Tarn Hows travel posters.
Blea Tarn
Finally, there is Blea Tarn, the small tarn located high on the pass between Great and Little Langdale, looking directly to the Langdale Pikes. The view of the Pikes from the shoreline is highly recognisable. Prints almost always frame this exact skyline, using the dark water in the foreground to anchor the peaks. The Blea Tarn — Railway Screen Print Travel Poster uses this classic composition. Browse our Blea Tarn travel posters to see this view interpreted in different ways.
Choosing a Style
Every lake is available in a range of styles. Once you settle on the water you want on your wall, you can consider how you want that landscape interpreted. The options range from the flat inks of the 1930s railway poster to Swiss reduction, Japanese woodblock, Art Nouveau, and layered papercut. You might favour the simple shapes and typography of a Railway Screen Print, the intricate, flowing lines of Art Nouveau, or the subtle gradients found in our Japanese Woodblock collection.
